TEX-LOCK AND MOKUMONO: A STYLISH APPROACH TO SAFETY

Tex Lock Mate Lock

E-bikes, such as those from Mokumono, are a major target for thieves. Last year, no fewer than 90,000 e-bikes were stolen in the Netherlands, especially in major cities! Preventing your bike from being stolen is therefore the number one priority for every e-bike owner. That’s why we chose the sturdy ART2-certified Abus ring lock combined with the Tex-Lock Mate padlock for the Mokumono Polder. The choice of Tex-Lock was a very deliberate one.

The benefits of tex-lock

- Different types of high-tech fibers each serve a specific purpose.

- The outer layer is water- and stain-resistant and gives the product its color.

- The following layers are resistant to cutting, sawing, and high temperatures.

- The core of the textile rope is made of specially hardened stainless steel.

- The textile lock weighs only a fraction of what traditional chain locks do.

Towing with chains

It goes without saying that if you’re not riding the Mokumono Polder, you always have to lock it up somewhere. But lugging around a three-kilogram chain lock is no fun and definitely inconvenient.  That was exactly what motivated German designer and avid cyclist Alexandra Baum to team up with fellow designer Suse Brand to develop a bike lock made of high-tech fibers. Baum says on the tex-lock website:“When we launched the tex-lock, we knew we were breaking new ground. After all, a bike lock made of ‘fabric’ had never existed before and seemed unthinkable at first. But high-quality fibers have many useful properties: they are flexible, lightweight, and very robust. This made it possible to develop a product that is fundamentally different from bike locks made of pure steel.”

Innovative use of materials

A smart design, in-depth knowledge of materials science, and entrepreneurial skills—these were the accolades tex-lock received upon the launch of its first model in 2017. “Tex-lock is a newcomer that is overshadowing the industry’s old giants,” concluded u-institut, a leading innovation institute in Germany. At Mokumono, we were immediately enthusiastic as well. And not just because of the quality of this textile lock. Just like Mokumono, tex-lock eschews tradition, breaks new ground, and thus arrives at surprising solutions to the challenges of our time. The tex-lock bike lock uniquely combines security, comfort, and style. And not unimportantly: thanks to its flexibility, the lock is easy to store in the space-trunk of the Mokumono Polder.

Made in Leipzig

Another thing tex-lock has in common with Mokumono is that the German company handles all production in-house. The locks are manufactured in their own factory in Leipzig and distributed from there. Regionality and sustainability are key principles for tex-lock, making the company a perfect fit for our goal of bringing the Mokumono Polder—a 100% European e-bike—to market. As far as we’re concerned, this applies not only to the bike itself but certainly also to all accessories. From this perspective, tex-lock’s innovative textile locks are a perfect match for our bikes.
