KEEP YOUR MOKUMONO IN SHAPE

Anything that gets a little love lasts longer. That goes for you, but also for your bike. There are a few simple things you can easily do yourself, in addition to regular professional maintenance.

01. THE TIRES

Your bike tires wear out more slowly when they are properly inflated, and you’ll also have a more comfortable ride with properly inflated tires. It’s a good habit to check the pressure at least once a month or every 500 kilometers. We recommend 3 bar (or 45 psi) as a good balance between efficiency, comfort, and puncture resistance. The specific minimum and maximum pressure can be found on the side of the tire.

The tires we use are long-lasting, but wear depends on the terrain and the number of kilometers you ride. It’s a good idea to regularly check the tires for small stones or other sharp objects in the tread (and remove them) or for cracks in the sidewalls. If the tire has no tread left, it’s time to replace it.

02. THE BRAKES

Your e-bike is equipped with disc brakes. Both the brake disc and the brake pads wear out, but the disc lasts much longer than the pads. We recommend a quick check of the brake pads after 1,000 kilometers. The thickness of a brake pad must be at least 1.5 millimeters. If it is less than that, we recommend replacing the brake pads. If the brake system loses pressure, please contact our service center. An annual brake inspection is always a good idea, regardless of the number of kilometers driven.


If your brakes are squeaking, clean the brake rotors with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Do not use foaming cleaners on the brake rotors, and do not touch the rotors or brake pads with your bare hands; use disposable gloves instead.

03. THE GATES BELT

For a smooth and quiet ride, the belt tension must be correct. If the belt is too loose, it can slip off the rear sprocket teeth and damage the belt. Too much tension can damage the bearings in the rear hub. To check the tension, you can download the free Bicycle Belt Tension Meter app from Gates. Hold your phone next to the bottom of the belt and wiggle it until you have three readings. An average of 45–60 Hz (or a 1 cm up-and-down movement) is recommended.

04. THE BATTERY

All lithium batteries degrade over time. On average, a lithium battery loses about 10 percent of its capacity each year of use. This means that the battery’s range will decrease over the course of your bike’s lifespan.


To keep the battery in the best possible condition, never charge it at temperatures below 0°C. And if you won’t be using the bike for a while, store the battery separately from the bike and charge it once a month.


To maximize the battery's range, it's best to inflate the tires to at least 3.0 bar and perform a quick check regularly to make sure the wheels are spinning freely.

05. CLEANING THE BIKE

Before cleaning your bike, remove the battery first. Do not use a pressure washer or harsh solvents such as ethanol or acetone. Wash your bike with water and a mild detergent, and use a soft brush or sponge. Clean the drive belt with water and a soft brush; the belt does not need to be lubricated! Clean the brake rotors with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Do not use foaming cleaners on the brake rotors, and do not touch the rotors or brake pads with bare hands; use disposable gloves instead.
